PetNat and natural wine — a simple guide

What is natural wine?

Natural wine usually means wine made with minimal intervention: local grapes, spontaneous or low-intervention fermentation, little or no added sulphites. The result often feels livelier and more "wild" — a style, not a flaw.

What is PetNat?

PetNat (pétillant naturel) is naturally sparkling wine. Fermentation finishes in the bottle, trapping CO₂ — without the classic Champagne secondary fermentation. Less filtration means a cloudier, more aromatic pour.

How it differs from Prosecco-style sparkling

Controlled sparkling is usually clear and repeatable. PetNat is batch- and producer-driven; each bottle can shift slightly. Natural/PetNat is not automatically "better" — it is a different approach.
