What is orange wine?

Orange wine is white-grape wine fermented with the skins — the same idea as red wine, but with white grapes. The result is an amber–orange colour, more tannin and texture than a classic white, and an aromatic, sometimes wilder flavour profile.

It is not wine flavoured with oranges. The name comes from the colour. In Estonia the English term orange wine dominates search; the Estonian oranž vein means the same style.

How it is made (skin contact)

The key is skin contact: after crushing (or with whole berries), skins, seeds and sometimes stems stay with the must far longer than for white wine.

  • White wine: skins removed quickly → pale, light, fresh.
  • Orange wine: skin contact for days to weeks (sometimes months) → colour, phenolics, structure.
  • Red wine: red grapes + skin contact → classic red colour and tannin.

Producers may use amphora, concrete or neutral wood; filtration is often light. A slight haze is style, not a fault.

Taste profile

Expect more texture than a standard white: gentle bitterness, tea or dried-herb notes, ripe citrus or dried apricot, sometimes nut or honey. Acidity usually stays lively; alcohol can be moderate. Serve cooler than red, warmer than ice-cold white — about 12–14 °C is a solid starting point.

It pairs well with cheese, pickled vegetables, mushrooms, or spiced Mediterranean and Asian food — and with slow evenings when you want something other than Sauvignon or Pinot Grigio.

Orange is not a “half red” or a spoiled white — it is its own category, revived in Italian natural wine / vini naturali circles.

Italian natural wine connection

Many orange wines sit in the natural wine approach: less intervention, spontaneous or low-intervention fermentation, little added sulphite. In Italy (Friuli, Sicily, Emilia, Tuscany and beyond), skin-contact whites have deep roots — not a marketing invention.
